Veterans up in arms over Gulf War snub

THE AUSTRALIAN Government has rejected the pleas of war veterans to recognise the existence of Gulf War Syndrome, thwarting the hopes of hundreds for extra medical aid and compensation.

Despite being recognised in both the United Kingdom and the United States, an investigation by the Repatriation Medical Authority, the results of which were announced in the authority's annual report, found the syndrome was not an injury or disease as defined by Veterans' Entitlements Act.

Veterans' groups said yesterday they were devastated by the ruling and felt abandoned by the country they had risked their lives to protect.

Former soldier Bruce Relph said, ''I'm disappointed that countries in the northern hemisphere have

Heritage wheel turns for bus depot

The nine-year battle to conserve Kingston's Old Bus Depot is over after the ACT's heritage authority agreed to permanently list the historic structure.

A final decision by the ACT Heritage Council this week noted the significance of the 70-year-old building's fully welded rigid steel portal frames and its historic value to early transport workers and their families.

But the council had twice refused to list the Old Bus Depot building on the Heritage Register, leading to ACT Government plans to sell the site for development.

Last year, The Canberra Times revealed the Land Development Agency proposed to demolish the Old

Shoppers' loyalty rewarded

We are all searching for a bargain, but experts agree value is more important than overall price when it comes to getting a good deal.

Queensland Consumers Association president Cherie Dalley said the best way to get a good deal was to research the product before shopping.

“Know exactly what you want to buy,” she said. “It’s very easy to get talked into purchasing the product that the store wants you to buy, rather than what suits your needs.”

Ms Dalley also warned consumers to be cautious about “value adding” on products, such as extra insurance.

“If you’re offered an extended warranty on a fridge, look at the service that you’re already getting most fridges already have a warranty of at least a year,” she said.

“Before purchasing an extra five years’ warranty, you have to think about the lifecycle of your fridge. You may well move to another house before then, where the fridge won’t fit in the space.”

Shopping at smaller businesses often has advantages with customer loyalty being rewarded, according to Dr Rebekah Russell-Bennett, of the Queensland University of Technology.

Dr Russell-Bennett, from QUT’s School of Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations, said: “Restaurants, for instance, often go the extra mile to reward loyal customers.

“They’ve been suffering in the current financial climate, so loyalty counts for a lot.”

Ms Dalley’s and Dr Russell-Bennett’s comments come as Quest Community Newspapers launches its latest Live Local Shop Local promotion in which readers can share in $24,200 worth of prizes.

As part of that prize pool, one lucky reader will win a $5000 grand prize.

Simply cut out and complete an entry form appearing in your local Quest newspaper for the next six weeks and place it in an entry box at a participating local business.

Not only will you have a chance at the $5000 cash, each participating Quest newspaper has two $100 shopping vouchers to give away each week.

RBA leaves rates on hold

The Reserve Bank has left interest rates on hold for a fifth straight month, but said they will rise again soon.

Many economists had expected the central bank was going to raise the cash rate for the first time in five months, although others had said it would be a line ball decision.

Governor Glenn Stevens said the official cash rate, at 4.5 per cent, was delivering borrowers interest rates around their average levels.

''The board regards this as appropriate for the time being. If economic conditions evolve as the board currently expects, it is likely that higher interest rates will be required, at some point, to ensure that inflation remains consistent with the medium-term target,'' he said.

''Asset values are not moving notably in either direction, and overall credit growth is quite subdued at this stage, notwithstanding evidence of some greater willingness to lend. Inflation has moderated from the excessive
