Feed Melbourne helps Wesley in the western suburbs

A $10,000 Feed Melbourne Grant has made a world of difference to Wesley Footscray Outreach.

The Barkly St centre needed urgent help to fix a rundown storage area, which was limiting their capacity to help the community.

Now where there were cupboard box shelves there is a new storage unit, sink and kitchen bench area, new flooring and a fresh coat of paint.

Co-ordinator Kylee Brehaut said the money had fallen into place at just the right time.

After securing another grant to buy a commercial fridge and freezer, Ms Brehaut was faced with the possibility they could sit idle.

“I don’t think it would have met health standards if we put them in the old room,” she said.

“Now people can come through a select what they want so it feels less like charity and we can have an extra fresh food market every week.”

The grants also came just in time for Wesley’s annual Food for Families Christmas appeal.

Ms Brehaut said one box of donations had already arrived but without the renovated room they would have been pushed to the limit with the influx of donations and volunteers.

Wesley Footscray Outreach support workers help around 30-35 people a day - on top of those who come in for free bread, fresh food markets and lunch.
