Australian soldier wounded in Afghanistan

An Australian soldier has suffered a serious gun shot wound during a battle with insurgents in Afghanistan.

Defence said the unnamed soldier was patrolling with Australian and Afghan soldiers in the Baluchi Valley of Oruzgan Province when a firefight with insurgents armed with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades began yesterday.

The soldier, who had only recently arrived in Afghanistan, was treated in the nearby Tarin Kowt base hospital and although Defence said he was in a satisfactory condition, it is expected he will return to Australia to recover.

No other Australian or Afghan army soldiers were wounded in the action, although it was unclear whether any insurgents were killed or wounded.

The soldier is the 52nd Australian to be wounded in Afghanistan this year and 152nd since operations began in 2001. Twenty-one Australians have been killed in action.
