VANDALS set fire to a post box on Crane Rd near Maybush Way at Castle Hill over the long weekend damaging the mail inside.

Australia Post retrieved some of the items which were damaged when the box was set on fire and has reported the incident to police.

Scott McIntyre from Australia Post tampering and interfering with Australia Post’s street posting boxes was a criminal offence, carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment.

“We encourage all residents to keep an eye on their local street posting box and to be vigilant in identifying and reporting any suspicious activity to the police on 1800 333 000.

“Australia Post takes all incidents of this nature very seriously, not only because of the impacts on local residents and their mail but also because incidents involving fire or esplosions pose a real risk to our staff and the public’s safety.”

The damage also means that important documents or sentimental items such as photos may be lost for ever.

Anyone who fears their mail may have been affected can contact the Australia Post Customer Service Centre on 13 13 18.
