Mitchelton anger on the high rise

MITCHELTON: Furious residents have called for the resignation of two Brisbane City Councillors who they allege have pushed “secret changes” on high density development through council.

Mitchelton Action Group president Paul Pouolus believes Councillor Andrew Wines and Cr Amanda Cooper have misled the public on changes to the Mitchelton plan and should be stood down.

They said a series of “secret changes” includes provision for a five-storey development on University Rd - originally designated for two storeys - and a change from three to four storeys along Osborne Rd North, Ruby Rd and Sussex St.

Mitchelton had been earmarked in a State Government report to accommodate an extra 1600 residents in the suburb in the next 20 years, a figure the actiou group wanted independently reviewed by a town planner prior to council approval.

Cr Wines (Enoggera) defended council’s decision and said the latest changes were in line with feedback gained from community consultation.

The community group will hold a protest meeting on October 6.

“Now we find that not only were the changes made, but they are far worse, and will have far more serious effects on Mitchelton, than council’s (previous) revised plan,” Mr Poulus said.

“We don’t have the infrastructure, we don’t have the water supply, we’ve got electricity problems, the traffic problems are horrendous.”

Cr Wines said Glenholm St had been included in the rezoning but he would have this removed.

“Frontage has been moved from three to five metres now, so there will be wider footpaths and more pedestrianisation along Blackwood St,” he said.

Changes have also been made to the Demolition Control Precinct with about 140 houses removed from the plan, and more than 250 houses added.

Cr Wines said further infrastructure projects would be announced in coming weeks.
