Nationwide search for new Melton CEO

MELTON Council is prepared to scour the country to find its new chief executive officer.

Mayor Justin Mammarella said no stone would be left unturned and the council “would take as long as it takes” to find the right person to replace outgoing CEO Neville Smith.

Mr Smith will leave next month to take over the reins at Moonee Valley City Council.

Cr Mammarella, along with Deputy Mayor Kathy Majdlik and Cr Broden Borg, comprise the three-person CEO review panel armed with the task of finding the shire’s next boss.

The committee met last week to appoint council general manager of corporate services Kelvin Tori as interim CEO.

Cr Mammarella said the council was looking to appoint a CEO who understood the challenges a fast-growing community like Melton brings.

“The new CEO must be able to continue and build on the good work carried out by Neville (Smith),” he said.

“Our growth is excep Leg 3 tional and unique, and the new CEO must have the necessary skills, expertise and knowledge to deal with that.

“We will cast the net far and wide and I’m not ruling out hiring a new CEO from interstate.

“The process will take as long as it takes as it’s not something that we want to rush.”

Cr Mammarella said he was not surprised by Mr Smith’s departure after nearly 10 years in the top job.

“It was common knowledge that Moonee Valley was looking for a new CEO and I have been mindful that we could lose Neville to a nearby council,” he said.

Mr Smith is believed to have upped his Melton CEO salary of $266,000 by at least $25,000 a year although his actual salary package remains confidential until his start date.
