Women's grant scheme helps mum pursue her dream

ABUK Atem fled war-torn Sudan with her four children to start a new life in Canberra.

But she couldn't stretch her income to pay for food for her children and the textbooks she needed to complete a Bachelor of Nursing.

Under the ACT Women's Return to Work Grants, Ms Atem received $1000 to help pay for the materials and books she needs to complete her studies and achieve her dream.

''It was really hard to afford the material for the course,'' she said. ''Some of the text books cost $250, just for the one book.''

Minister for Women Joy Burch said she was pleased to be able to help Ms Atem through the grants scheme, which provides financial support to low-income mothers out of work for 12 months or more to improve their qualifications or skills to re-enter the workforce.

''Abuk Atem fled to a Kenyan refugee camp because of the armed conflict in Sudan,'' Ms Burch said.

''Abuk who is a mother of four children went without food as she struggled to save for textbooks and materials for her course.
