Murder accused 'slept with knives'

The woman accused of an alleged stabbing murder in Canberra's south more than two years ago used to sleep with knives under her pillow for protection, a court has heard.

The 20-year-old is on trial for the alleged murder of apprentice chef Cameron Anderson in September 2008.

She was 17 at the time of the alleged offence and cannot be named.

The accused's former girlfriend told the ACT Supreme Court today the defendant used to sleep with knives because she had previously been bullied.

"She had two of them that she slept with under her pillow that she would only use in self-defence if someone tried to break in and hurt her,'' the witness said.

The court heard the pair confided regularly, and the defendant had told the witness she was sexually abused by both her grandfather and stepfather.

The prosecution alleges the then-teenager lured Mr Anderson to a pine tree on the grounds of the Baptist Church near Telopea Park in the early hours of September 1 and stabbed him eight times.

The 19-year-old Queanbeyan man's body was found behind a Kingston child-care centre about 7am that morning.

The accused woman's barrister, Bernard Collaery, is arguing his client was raped by Mr Anderson and acted in self-defence.

She was treated for a stab injury to the leg in the aftermath of the alleged incident.

The trial before Chief Justice Terence Higgins continues tomorrow.
