Girl indecently assaulted at Cairds Ave, Bankstown

Bankstown police are appealing for witnesses to the indecent assault of a young woman at Bankstown yesterday.

The 17-year-old told police she was walking along Cairds Ave about 6.15pm when she was approached by a man who stopped her in the street and began asking her questions.

When the girl attempted to walk away the man indecently assaulted her.

The girl persuaded the man to let her go and she was assisted by a witness who saw she was distressed. Police were then alerted.

Police immediately patrolled the area but were unable to find the man or the van.

The man is described as being of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean appearance, aged in his early 20s, 175cm-185cm tall with an athletic build. At the time he was wearing a white t-shirt and shorts and had been driving a white van.

Bankstown Crime Manager, Detective Chief Inspector Glen Fitzgerald, said police needed information from the public to identify the man involved.

“I am very concerned about this incident as this girl was simply walking along a suburban street in broad daylight when she was assaulted by this man,” Det Ch Insp Fitzgerald said.

“We are grateful that one witness has already come forward but we need more information to identify the man responsible.

“We believe the man has been in the area, and has been seen driving this van during the two weeks.

“This leads us to speculate that he either lives or works in the area.

“The victim was extremely distressed by the incident and is being supported by her family and Bankstown detectives.

“Anyone who saw the incident, or saw a white van in or near Cairds Ave about 6.15pm yesterday, should contact police immediately,” Det Ch Insp Fitzgerald said.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Bankstown Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
