NBN bill passes Senate

The Senate has passed legislation to split Telstra, paving the way for the National Broadband Network, expected to cost $35.7 billion.

By 30 votes to 28, the Senate agreed to separate the retail and wholesale arms of Telstra during a special sitting of the Upper House.

The House of Representatives will return on Monday to consider the amended bill, which the Gillard Government wants to pass before the Christmas-New Year break.
