RHONDA and Howard McCallum lost their first child, Brent, to cot death.

Next year they would have celebrated his 40th birthday.

“Nothing prepares you for that,” Mrs McCallum said.

The Castle Hill couple went on to have three more children and are now kept busy with five grandchildren.

While the memory of their eldest child is always with them, the couple take great comfort from the annual remembrance service at St Matthew’s Anglican Church at West Pennant Hills.

The annual service is held just before Christmas for families and friends of children who have died or are missing.

This year’s service is on December 1 at 7.30pm.

Organiser Lynne Molan said the service provided support and hope for families: “It is always difficult living in a world without one of your children but on special occasions it is particularly difficult.”

The McCallums have been attending for about 10 years.

“It’s a specific night to think about him,” said Mrs McCallum.

During the service families are invited to place a flower on the communion table in memory of the child who died.

This year’s guest speaker is the Rev Paul O’Brien who lost a child in tragic circumstances.

Following the service there will be a light supper. Childminding will be available during the service. Inquiries: 9479 3700.
