GARDENING, sewing and being a “good” person may just be the secrets to living a long life. Last Friday, Lois Wilbow achieved a milestone that many of us will never achieve.

In the company of around 15 of her closest friends and family, Mrs Wilbow celebrated her 90th birthday at Blacktown Workers Club.

The sprightly Blacktown resident comes from a strong lifeline of female family members who have lived a higher than average age-Mrs Wilbow’s mother lived to 94, her grandmother to 87 and her auntie to 100.

But Mrs Wilbow doesn’t point to healthy genetics as the reason she has lived so long.

Instead, she thinks her longevity boils down to a couple of hobbies and a bit of good luck.

“I must have been a good girl,” she joked.

“I love my gardening and sewing. Gardening is my number one passion and I was still doing it up until one or two years ago.”

Mrs Wilbow’s friends can certainly attest to her being a good girl.

“She’s just so beautiful and she has never said a bad word about anyone ever ... she’s just a really really special lady, a special person,” Ruth Crowther said.

Since her move to Blacktown in 1962 with her husband and two sons, Lois has witnessed some big changes. “It was more or less just country out here. Main St had a Woolworths, a Coles and that was it.”
