NAB ATM in Fyshwick blown up

Police are calling for witnesses after would-be robbers unsuccessfully tried to blast their way into a Fyshwick ATM safe this morning.

Alarms at the NAB bank on Wollongong Street were triggered shortly before 3am, and police arrived to find the ATM facade blown away from the bank wall.

Detective Senior Constable Ash Laidler from ACT Policing's Criminal Investigation team said it appeared the robbers used an acetylene bottle to damage the machine.

``They've pumped the gas into the ATM and ignited it at some point. That caused an explosion, which has resulted in what you can see here,'' he said at the scene this morning.

Wreckage from the blast was strewn across the sidewalk, but Mr Laidler said no cash was taken during the attempted robbery.

AFP Forensic Services were at the bank examining the crime scene.

Police have taken video surveillance footage from a camera pointing directly at the ATM.

``We have that footage, we'll be reviewing it, and we'll also be capturing footage from up and down the area and we'll be reviewing that as well,'' Mr Laidler said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
