Castle Hill couple’s love for each other still blooming

Castle Hill couple’s love for each other still blooming

English rose and her captain: Val and Geoff Baskerville enjoy their surprise 50th wedding anniversary celebrations at Eurolounge.

THERE once was an English rose called Val who married her captain Geoff Baskerville.

Mr and Mrs Baskerville, of Castle Hill, celebrated 50 years of marriage last Wednesday.

The day before their official celebrations they received what they described as the best surprise when they arrived for a celebratory lunch with their friend Narelle Burns at Eurolounge. When they arrived there were up to 14 of their dearest friends waiting for them.

Mrs Burns said they were genuinely surprised and Mrs Baskerville could not stop saying “Oh my Lord!”

Mr Baskerville said he was “gobsmacked”.

The Baskerville’s moved to Australia and the Hills six years ago from England and have seven grandchildren.

Mr Baskerville, a captain in the merchant navy, and his wife, a stenographer, met in 1958.

“I was chief officer on a ship going to the Persian Gulf and Val was travelling as a passenger and you could say we were mutually attracted to each other from the first time we meet,” Mr Baskerville said.

They married on April 28, 1960, in Stockton-on-Tees.

“We came to Australia to be closer to our oldest daughter Karen and because of the great weather,” he said.

The couple’s two sons, John and Paul, live in England.
