A NEWPORT motorcyclist is preparing to take on the second biggest threat to men’s health using two wheels and the support of a few mates.

Ray Lindner is one of about 200 riders registered for a 4373km overland adventure to Darwin, raising funds for The Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Nearly 3300 men die each year of prostate cancer, equal to the number of women who die from breast cancer.

Departing April 30, the mostly baby-boomer rev-heads will literally go to the back of Bourke (NSW), through to Longreach, Mount Isa, Tennant Creek and Katherine on their motorbikes.

The ride will finish in Darwin, where they’ll be greeted by the president of The Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Mr Lindner, a Rotary Club of Point Gellibrand member, is no stranger to epic motorcycle journeys.

He has navigated the highest road in the world in the Himalayas and dirt tracks in South America and Malaysia. Darwin will be the first fundraiser.

Mr Linder said the ride was all about taking on prostate cancer, an illness men do not feel well-informed on.

“This will help not only by fundraising but by every person that goes on this ride has probably looked at this and got a bit more information,” he said.

“So it’s not just the direct link of the 200 riders going there. As I become more aware, I’ll make sure my 40-year-old son is more aware. And so it passes on.

“Funding will help get the message out but also word of mouth increases through events like this.”

Rotary Club of Point Gellibrand president Faye Lanyon said Mr Lindner was “admired” by his peers for wanting to help.

“You’d think he was 20 years old. He just has that spirit,” she said.

“And it’s infectious too. It cascades around the club when you’ve got someone so passionate about something.”

Mr Lindner is seeking a major sponsor for his ride, which can have its business name “vinyl-wrapped” over his BMW cruiser.

He said the business would get exposure across three states and the Northern Territory, including on the return journey.
