A FRESH-faced Ian Gillespie has emerged from underneath his trademark bushy beard - shaved for the first time in 16 years on Saturday.

It was a small sacrifice for the Woodford resident, who lost his locks during the World’s Greatest Shave at Morayfield Shopping Centre.

Mr Gillespie’s 8-year-old son Justin had never seen his father without a beard, and wielded the clippers for the big shave.

``He got a great laugh out of shaving me up on stage,’’ said Mr Gillespie, whose family, including his mother-in-law, has been touched by cancer.

``I saw her go through the treatments and lose all of her hair, so this is just a fraction of her pain.’’

Mr Gillespie, who raised $1700 for the Leukaemia Foundation, said having his head shaved was emotional but a rewarding experience.

``It brought back memories of everyone who had cancer and what they had to go through,’’ he said.

While his wife Janelle was not a fan of the new look, Mr Gillespie said she was happy to see him shave.

``She says the money that I raised for the Leukaemia Foundation more than makes up for seeing me without the beard,’’ he said.

``I’d just like to thank all the people out there who supported me. There really are no words to describe your generosity,’’ he said.

President of the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland’s Caboolture Branch Jane McMillan said the marquee day at Morayfield Shopping Centre day was a success.

``We had a great crowd come down and support the people who were shaving and colouring their hair,’’ she said.

Mrs McMillan said 99 people shaved or coloured their hair on the day.

``Across the region we’ve raised over $40,000, which is a fantastic effort,’’ she said.

Mrs McMillan joined Mr Gillespie in thanking the community for the generosity shown over the weekend.

``It’s just so good that we have a community who cares and really turns out to support an event like this,’’ she said.
