Monarchists gear up for a crowning achievement

THE CHAMPAGNE corks will be flying in Woden on April 29, as Canberra monarchists gather to celebrate the royal wedding.

Dinner parties will be held in each state and territory in honour of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, hosted by the Australian Monarchist League.

The chairman of the ACT and district branch of the league, Matthew Sait, said that beyond the spectacular visual impact the wedding would undoubtedly have, the nuptials would have a deeper meaning about the succession of the crown.

''I think the wedding symbolises the continuity of the monarchy it's the next generation,'' he said.

''We have a chain of succession.''

Mr Sait predicted the wedding would also have a positive impact on the popularity of the monarchy.

''Prince William is personally quite popular in Australia and everybody loves a wedding and it also reminds us this is not something you get in a republic.''

The monarchists are not alone in their gathering, with plenty of house parties understood to be taking place in the ACT on the Friday night.

''A number of our members had to RSVP they could not attend because they are already committed to other parties for the royal wedding,'' Mr Sait said.
