BLACKTOWN Hospital intern Archit Chawla has been on duty less than a week and has already performed a life-saving procedure.

Dr Chawla is one of 20 new interns who will spend a year working between Blacktown and Mount Druitt hospitals as part of an annual recruiting program.

Dr Chawla, who plans to pursue a career in critical care, spent seven years at the University of Queensland before being placed at Blacktown Hospital last week.

“Because it’s a smaller hospital it won’t be like you see in shows like Grey’s Anatomy which are very American,” he said.

“We will get to go home on time and sleep and not be required to do an extra 10 hours overtime per day.”

Dr Chawla, whose family lives locally, said on his third day on the job he was required to help a cardiac patient who stopped breathing.

“We had to perform emergency CPR, the patient was dead for a few seconds but we revived him,” he said.

Pakistani trained intern Nadia Khan is also in her first week at Blacktown.

She hopes to pursue a career in either emergency care or paediatrics.”
