Police confident of finding Greenacre gunman

POLICE say they are confident of finding the gunman who terrorised a Greenacre family of 10 when he opened fire on their house, riddling it with 11 bullets and hitting one of the children.

“We certainly have a number of inquiries that are occurring at the moment,” Bankstown commander Supt Dave Eardley said.

“We’re confident that we will identify and bring the offender before the courts.”

The Alkadmani family were at their Roberts Rd house about 10.35pm on December 27 when a man knocked on the door.

Mohamad, the father of the family, answered. A man of Pacific Islander appearance asked to speak to a man named Zac.

Mr Alkadmani told the man there was nobody there by that name before shutting the door.

Several shots were then fired into the house, striking 11-year-old Mariam Alkadmani on her right thigh.

The family retreated to the bathroom.

Mariam was taken to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead where she is in a stable condition.

Police believe the incident was a matter of mistaken identity.

“We believe the person went to the wrong house,” Supt Eardley said.

Having ruled out a link to any other incidents, police are examining a red Holden Commodore, which was found burnt out in Shellcote St, Greenacre, after the shooting.

“We believe the vehicle that was targeted and set alight was linked to it,” Supt Eardley said.

A 73-year-old neighbour of the Alkadmani family, who did not wish to be named, said the family was “all right but they’re all scared”.

“I just keep the door locked now just because of that. I never used to lock the door. I’ve lived here for 60-odd years and nothing like this has happened.”

Supt Eardley played down suggestions crime in Greenacre was worse than other suburbs.

``We certainly don’t believe Greenacre residents are at any greater risk to anyone else in Sydney in relation to this sort of crime,” he said.

“Roberts Rd hasn’t normally been the subject of this type of incident. It’s very unusual for this type of area. Gun crime is something we devote a lot of resources to.”

NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research data showed the Bankstown local government area, in which Greenacre is located, had the third highest number of incidents in which guns are used to fire at properties between July 2008 and June 2009. There were nine such incidents in Bankstown during that period, behind Fairfield (16) and Auburn (12).

Between July 2007 and June 2008 there were five shootings at properties in Bankstown. Fairfield was ranked first that year (12), followed by Penrith (six). * POLICE have not drawn a link between offenders involved in an armed robbery at Greenacre Bowling and Recreation Club on December 23 with the family shooting in the same street four days later.

The pair who robbed the club were of Pacific Islander or Maori appearance and armed with a handgun and machete. They forced open the front doors to the club on Roberts Rd, Greenacre, about 9pm. Once inside they threatened staff and patrons before stealing cash from the registers and a safe. The offenders then ran away. No shots were fired during the incident and nobody was injured. The gunman who opened fire on the Alkadmani family was of Pacific Islander appearance.

But Supt Eardley said: “There’s nothing at this stage to indicate these incidents are linked.”
