Canterbury Hurlstone RSL big cash donor

COMMUNITY groups took centre stage at Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club recently when a variety of organisations, from charities to schools joined staff at a presentation thanking them for financial donations.

This year, the club donated more than $410,500 to a host of groups.

Chief executive officer Dean Thomas said the community was populated by people and organisations that “went that extra mile for anyone in need”.

Several sporting organisations benefited from the club, including Canterbury Junior Football, Canterbury Junior Rugby Union Football, Earlwood Saints Junior Rugby League Football and Hurlstone Park Cricket clubs and the Australian Academy of Gymnastics. Funding was allocated for coaching clinics, trophies, uniforms and equipment.

Schools were also given lots of attention, including Wangee Park School at Lakemba, which received $25,000 for therapy equipment and a physiotherapist to develop programs for children.

Principal Diana Humphries thanked the club for the help it provided.

“Guardian angels come in many forms and we salute Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club for its generosity,” she said.

Ashbury Public School also received funds, which it used to support its dance group and room hire for musical and presentation night. Wiley Park Public and Canterbury Boys’ High schools also benefited from the club’s donations.

Mary MacKillop Outreach, a volunteer-run disability support service for people living with a mental illness, received $9900 to aid its recreational, educational, social, living skills and pre-vocational training programs.
