Unemployment levels low in Hills

PROSPEROUS times in the Hills have brought unemployment levels to an all-time low.

Unemployment has fallen by 33 per cent in the past 12 months, with an extra 1541 people securing a job.

“Our region’s contribution to the State economy has almost doubled in just three short years,” Hills Shire Mayor Mike Thomas said.

100,480 residents in the Hills now have a job as business continues to boom.

“Unemployment is falling, employment is growing,” Cr Thomas said.

“This is a great result and proof of how attractive business is becoming in the Hills.”

Total sales by companies in the Hills grew from $9.8 billion to $17.1 billion in the past three years, according to figures compiled by Compelling Economics.

In that time employment increased from 44,000 to 51,000 local jobs and wages increased from $2.4 billion to $4 billion.

“These figures are a great indicator that our area is growing strongly,” Cr Thomas said.

Sydney Hills Chamber president Tony Moran said this was a very positive sign of the growing business opportunities in the area.

“There are still a lot of employment opportunities becoming available as businesses continue to migrate here, particularly in the Norwest Business Park,” he said.

Mr Moran said he fully supports the Hills Shire Council’s efforts to reach their target of adding another 47,000 jobs to the area in the next 20 years.

The council is encouraging more businesses to move into the area by offering appointments to help them understand the local economy.

“Council’s economic development team have this modelling and forecasting information available for local businesses to use,” Cr Thomas said.

Confidential business information appointments with the council can be made at 9843 0324.
