BLACKTOWN Council will attempt to Paint the Town Read in order to improve future literacy levels in the area.

The council will support the Paint Blacktown Read program, which targets children aged 0-3 to improve literacy and cognitive ability from next year.

The program was first initiated more than 10 years ago in Parkes, and has proven highly successful in western Sydney areas like Mount Druitt and Riverstone.

The concept was derived from research that showed engaging children in reading, singing, talking and rhyming from birth increased their capacity to read and write later in childhood.

Mayor Alan Pendleton said it was important to support such initiatives, as the impressions people make on children during infancy have a strong bearing on the rest of their childhood.

“They set the foundations for their language development and their future reading

and academic success,” Cr Pendleton said.

Research conducted by the Australian early Development Index in 2009 claimed 11 per cent of children in the Blacktown LGA were developmentally at risk, while 7.7 per cent were developmentally vulnerable.

A series of programs and activities will be planned for next year with all residents invited to help.

Blacktown City Libraries at Blacktown, Mount Druitt, Lalor Park, Riverstone and Stanhope Gardens already offer a range of story time sessions.
