A helping hand in times of need

CHRIS Arnott has weathered a few storms after 32 years as an SES volunteer.

He has stepped down from the role of Deputy Local Controller of the Moreton Bay SES Unit after 18 years in the executive ranks.

Mr Arnott joined the Arana Hills SES group when it formed in 1978 after he witnessed the devastating effect of storms and wanted to do something to help the community.

``Going through the `74 floods you saw a lot of graphic damage,’’ he said.

``When you’ve seen the howling winds and the rain and hail a lot of people realise it’s something the average person can’t cope too well with which is why the SES is a great organisation to be able to help.’‘

Mr Arnott said he’d given about 35,000 hours of service as an SES volunteer and said he’d gained a lot of satisfaction from his contribution.

``A lot of other people are in your hands, particularly when you’re working together on damaged homes or with missing persons.’‘

Mr Arnott was Controller of the SES Pine Rivers Unit from 2000 to 2009 so co-ordinated the response to assist 800,000 damaged homes during the severe storms that hit Brisbane in November 2008.

He said one of the most rewarding parts of his role had been helping train other volunteers to capably respond to emergency call-outs.

``The training has been really enjoyable and I feel I’ve contributed.’’
