Grand day for family elders

NANNYS, papas, nonnas and opas united for Queensland’s first official Grandparents Day on Sunday, November 7.
Regardless of the term of endearment they are branded with, grandparents across the state enjoyed an excuse to spend the day with their beloved grandchildren to mark the event.
Grandparents Day was established by the Bligh Government as part of its seniors strategy called Positively Ageless.
State member for Everton Murray Watt enjoyed the day with his mother Kathy Watt - a doting Grandmother to grandson George and granddaughter Abbie.
``Queensland is the first state in Australia to hold an official Grandparents Day, recognising the important role grandparents play in their families and the community,’’ Mr Watt said.
``It was a good chance for my family to say thanks to our grandparents for their love and support.’‘
Ann Jones, mother to member for Ashgrove, Kate Jones, was thrilled to have five-month-old Thomas on hand to commemorate the occasion with.
``In my family, and many others, grandparents play a crucial role in keeping families together, and guiding and teaching their grandchildren as they grow,’’ Ms Jones said.
