Crime on the slide in Melton shire

CRIME in Melton shire is on retreat, according to the latest Victoria Police statistics.

Significant reductions in drug offences and residential burglaries headlined the latest figures, which revealed the overall crime rate in Melton shire dropped by 5.4 per cent from the same time last year.

There were 5990 crimes committed per 100,000 people in the shire from October 2009 to September 2010, down from 6334 the previous year.

Drug offences fell 18.1 per cent from 269 to 220 offences while crime against property fell 7.3 per cent from 4734 to 4388 offences.

But crime against the person rose 4.3 per cent from 816 to 851 offences.

Police saw a big fall in residential burglaries, down 11.7 per cent from 908 to 802 offences.

Theft from motor vehicles fell 11.2 per cent from 832 to 739 offences while theft of motor vehicles fell 11.1 per cent from 291 to 259 offences.

Property damage fell 8.2 per cent from 1016 to 933 offences and other burglaries fell 4.6 per cent from 185 to 176 offences.

Robberies fell from 38 to 37 (down 2 per cent) while assaults fell from 674 to 668 (down 0.9 per cent).

Meanwhile, in the July 2009 to June 2010 period, traffic fatalities dropped from 9.7 to 6 (down 38.2 per cent) and serious injuries fell from 139 to 76 (down 45.4 per cent).

Melton Inspector Mario Fiorentino said construction site burglaries remained a target for police.

“Residential burglaries continue to be a problem in the Melton and Caroline Springs areas, with a number of new housing developments,” he said.

“New homes under construction are usually located in poorly lit, remote or infrequently visited areas, making it very attractive to would-be thieves.”

Insp Fiorentino said the Melton policing area had been identified as one of the top 10 in Victoria experiencing large population increases and high demand for police services.

“Over coming years, the area has been earmarked for proportionate increases in the number of police, which will be of great benefit to the community and our customers,” he said.
