Cheap healthy food from your own garden

Cheap healthy food from your own garden

It's seldom out of the media these days: the weekly shop and the price of food.

One way to reduce the cost of feeding your family is to grow your own food.

Peter Kearney, organic food growing consultant and founder of Cityfoodgrowers.com.au, is on a mission to help as many people as possible become successful home food growers.

"Of the many benefits of growing your own food, the bottom line at the checkout is a major factor for many families who start to grow their own food.

"Every household can grow some of their own food organically – from a few herbs on the windowsill to a whole backyard of fruit and vegetables or getting a spot at a local community garden."

Peter designed cityfoodgrowers.com.au to take the guesswork out of planting and growing food, by allowing users to enter their garden profile into their account and be given clear advice on how to place the garden and types of plants best suited to their area.

"I found that many people were using terms like 'temperate' or 'sub-tropical' climates, which are broad categories established a number of years ago," he said.

"These categories don't take into account the changes in temperatures we've had over the past 20 or so years.

"cityfoodgrowers.com.au allows users to enter their local area into their user profile, and they are given a list of fruits, vegetables, herbs and trees which are suitable for them to plant.

"It also takes into account the time of year, so in October someone living in Brisbane could plant

"Composting, for example, is easy, but you need to know how to do it. Many people don't know that there is a fast way as well as the slow way.

"Companion planting is another thing that can make or break a new organic gardener. Get it right and crops thrive. Get it wrong and it can be disheartening to the novice gardener."

Peter's website also tackles problem-solving such as how to avoid pests and weeds, or seasonal problems such as frost or heat.

Peter started cityfoodgrowers.com.au in 2008 and since then has helped more than 2500 subscribers become successful at growing their own food.

"My real motivation is to help people eat better food, reduce the amount of chemicals they may consume and help them move beyond recycling to become a more sustainable way of life," he said.
Ends.

About cityfoodgrowers.com.au: Cityfood Growers was established in 2006 with the aim of providing people living in and around cities with "services and knowledge to support the transformation of our food system to be more local and organic," according to the company's website.

Owner Peter Kearney said the company also offers organic gardening workshops and consulting services to schools, organisations and individuals in and around Brisbane.
