Sue Dengate to talk to Hills parents about food labels

A THOROUGH read of the nutrition labels on the food you eat may just be the key to a calm, happy family.

Author of the Fed Up book series Sue Dengate will pay a visit to Castle Hill this Thursday to talk about how food additives can affect the health and behaviour of children.

Ms Dengate has studied the effects of food chemicals for more than 20 years and is currently travelling around the country holding talks on the matter.

She said many parents are not aware that food additives can cause many problems in their children such as asthma, irritability and sleep disturbance.

“It’s a hard message to get across,” she said.

“Most people think that artificial is bad and fresh is good but that’s not always the case.”

Ms Dengate said a good lesson is label reading is necessary as they can be deceiving.

“A lot of people don’t realise that manufacturers have developed a whole lot of mild sounding names in the ingredients that really just the same old additives,” she said.

“Most people know to avoid MSG but what they don’t realise is there are many different ways of saying it.”

But she insists a total ban of certain foods is not the answer.

“I’m not saying you should avoid all junk food, I understand that children need treats and fun too.”

The talk will be held this Thursday at 7pm at the Castle Grand Community Centre.

Tickets are $12. Inquiries: 9761 4510.
