Breakfast announcer Adam Spencer and his audience took the pensioner to their hearts as a regular contestant in the Voice from the Vault competition.

Mr Lawrence became such a favourite over the years that often the two would just chat on air.

They were due for another on-air catch-up last week but Mr Lawrence died in the early hours of July 27. His funeral was yesterday.

On Wednesday there was a tribute to Big Bad Bill from Castle Hill on the breakfast show that he used to listen to from 5am every day.

Spencer said he was proud to have him as a fan saying he was a “real character”.

“He was a beautiful man, a really caring man and a hilarious man.

“We love him and miss him very much.”

A passionate volunteer, Mr Lawerence was 79. The former accountant had lived at Warrina Village for seven years and mentored residents.

He was a volunteer driver with Parramatta Community Transport and served on the management committee as voluntary treasurer.

When he moved to Castle Hill he became treasurer of the Warrina Resident Council, overseeing the funds of the council, the Village Coffee Shop and kept the books in order for the The Mixed Nuts singing group.

He was the resident advocate on the Warrina Village Management Committee and in 2009 received a NSW Seniors Achievement Award.

Spencer said Big Bad Bill loved the Voice in the Vault competition and would look up birth dates on the website the night before in the hope of finding clues to the famous voice featured the next day.

He said once they found his method they had to make the connection to the date more obscure.

A collection of his on-air comments were played as a tribute backed by a recording of the Mixed Nuts singing Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head.

Spencer called him “a 702 radio legend”.
