Rave parties explode

BRISBANE: Safety concerns have been raised over the growing number of “rave parties” in Fortitude Valley.

During a safety audit last weekend, Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Community Safety Group subcommittee found two parties in streets just metres from the Valley Police Station.

Held in unused industrial premises, the venues feature signs advising entry for members over 18.

Brisbane Central District police inspector Steve Donnelly said police were aware of several commercial locations in the Valley that held BYO alcohol private parties and often had their own security guards.

“Essentially it’s a couple of premises used to hold parties, much like suburban parties, in terms of the legality,” he said.

“We attend them from time to time to make sure there is not the sale of grog or drug activity.”

Valley Chamber Property Owners Group co-chair Carol Gordon said the parties raised “important safety concerns”, with hundreds of people in dimly-lit streets which are largely unserviced by transport services, without properly trained hospitality professionals on hand.

“There’s more and more of them happening and the problem is it is very confusing regarding who has the responsibility for these people,” she said.

“Some of them make a lot of noise and because they are in the entertainment precinct near a hotel, the hotel gets noise complaints.

The audit uncovered concerns about public transport, inadequate street lighting, raised footpaths, blind spots in car parks and damaged fencing around QR property, which allowed easy access for graffiti artists.
