Hills Shire Council opens up during Local Government Week

PEOPLE can get an inside look at the happenings of local government next week when Hills Shire Council opens its doors for the first time.

There will be a number of festivities on Saturday, August 7 to celebrate Local Government Week.

Rouse Hill Public School year 6 student Melanie Hopman will take the role of mayor and cut the ribbon at the opening.

Melanie won the council’s Mayor for a Day competition which invited primary school students to draw or write what they loved about living in the Hills.

Mayor Peter Dimbrowsky picked out Melanie’s story from a sea of entries last week.

“It was just a lovely entry from a little girl who loves being in the Shire,” he said.

“It’s a wonderful competition and a lovely way to engage a young generation in local government.”

The other students’ entries are now on display at the council building.

Residents can then enjoy a full day of activities with a tour of the council chambers to meet the staff and get a behind-the-scenes look.

Other activities planned include the Great Aussie Swap Shop, face painting, recycled art activities and the skate clinic and demo.

Young skaters will have the chance to enhance their skills and learn safety from professional coaches and pro-skaters.

Free native plants will also be given away by the Bidjiwong Community Nursery to encourage people to think about the natural environment in the Shire.
