CBD supermarket slots into city mix

BRISBANE: Brisbane’s CBD is full of ritzy hotels, lavish watering holes, tranquil parks and fine restaurants but until this week, there has been one thing missing a full-sized supermarket.

All that changed on Monday when, after weeks of disruption, a refurbished Woolworths Macarthur Chambers opened.

Store manager Justin Lanson said the size of the store had doubled to 2200sq m.

“Before this revamp it would be fair to say Woolworths in the city was little more than a convenience store,” Mr Lanson said.

“The increasing number of residents living in the heart of Brisbane, as well as the needs of the many business people and visitors to the city, has proven to us that a much bigger and more modern supermarket was needed.”

Employing 110 staff, the new store is the size of a conventional suburban Woolworths, complete with on-site bakery and butcher. “This store is uniquely designed for the city and caters for customers who just want to nip in for a lunchtime snack or ingredients for that night’s dinner as well as those that want to do a full shop,” Mr Lanson said.

“To help get in and out of the store as fast as possible the revamped store will feature 30 checkouts, including 12 express and 14 self-serve checkouts, the most of any supermarket in Queensland.”

It also features a section for tourists , while those keen to do a complete grocery shop will be provided free hour-long parking for sales over $30.

“We know how much residents and workers have been waiting for a full-sized supermarket in the city so I’m really pleased to welcome them back into a much-improved Woolies,” Mr Lanson said.
