Woolly plan for homeless

Diane Hinds has been ''overwhelmed with beanies and scarves and I think I'm getting mittens and gloves and fingerless mittens''.

However, the brightly coloured (and warm) woollies are all for a good cause.

Hinds is one of the directors of the Old Bus Depot Markets and will be spending a night sleeping rough for the Vinnies CEO Sleepout on June 17, raising funds to combat homelessness.

Her charity efforts coincide with Wool Day at the markets this Sunday and to mark the event stallholders have donated a pile of warm, woolly items to Vinnies.

''A lot of [stallholders] handspin wool, they hand dye wool, they do it right from the start to the finish. They're really amazing people, I'm just stunned at the quality of the produce,'' she said.

''So they have risen to the call and many of them are wanting to donate.'' Vinnies will distribute the jumpers, beanies, scarves, gloves, hats and other assorted woollies to homeless Canberrans after the sleepout.

The beautiful, brightly coloured yarns in the photo come from Irene Rawlings and her daughter Michelle, who specialise in mohair yarn from angora goats.

The hand-dyed yarns will be at the Old Bus Depot Markets at the weekend and Hinds says they're popular with crafters.

''I'll never forget last year, walking past Irene's stall on Wool Day,'' she said.

''People were elbowing each other aside to get to her stall.''
