O'Dwyer burns for the Swans

A WHOPPING 67-possession game from Sydney Swans reserves midfielder Matt O'Dwyer helped his team to a 63-point win over Belconnen at Manuka Oval yesterday.

O'Dwyer was a key in Swans victory, racking up 53 disposals, 14 marks and a goal which should earn him a spot in the seniors team next week when Sydney take on Hawthorn at the MCG.

''I thought I worked really hard and I've been emergency the last two weeks, so hopefully I get the call-up,'' O'Dwyer said.

The Swans team bounced back from a 53-point beating handed to them by Tuggeranong last round to thump last year's premiers.

Coach Daniel McPherson said it was the best team performance that he has seen in the last two years.

''We have struggled away from home this season and last season but the boys' intensity and team-work was top notch,'' he said.

O'Dwyer wasn't the only one who had a day out, with Trent Dennis-Lane kicking seven goals.

''We didn't come switched on [against Tuggeranong] but today was a more focused team effort,'' Dennis-Lane said.

Belconnen forward Andrew Ainger looked dangerous early and finished the match with three majors but the Swans' skills and tenacity proved too much for the Magpies.

It was probably not the return to football that Magpies ruckman Marty Rice was hoping for. The big man got back from China on Thursday and battled hard in his first game back.

The battle between Sam Reid and Andrew Ainger kept fans entertained with Reid doing a solid job on Ainger despite the forward's three goals. At half time Belconnen trailed 5-3-33 to 9-7-61.
