Hitman strikes in Hughes

A lone gunman killed a man in a planned hit in a quiet Hughes street early yesterday, police say. And a gun located in a Deakin drain may hold the clues to the identity of the shooter.

The victim was seated with two others in a Hyundai Excel parked on Whittle Street when the gunman approached at about 12.30am yesterday, firing two shots at close range.

One hit the frame of the driver's side door. The other shattered the windscreen and hit the driver in the chest.

Neighbours reported hearing an argument before the shots, with a woman heard screaming ''where are we, where are we'' shortly after the shooting.

Late last night police were yet to make an arrest in the case. They have confirmed the victim was known to police, but did not release his name, age or suburb as relatives were being notified.

Superintendent Brett McCann said the two other people in the car at the time of the shooting were brought in for questioning but were later released. He described the pair as ''emotionally distraught and in shock, but [had] no physical injuries''.

Superintendent McCann said police did not believe the pair was in danger despite the murder being planned.

At about 10am police began conducting a line search of Denison Street in Deakin adjacent to Alfred Deakin High School. They eventually removed two concrete blocks from over a drain and set a tarpaulin over the area. At about 11am they pulled out what was later confirmed to be a gun and placed it into evidence.
