Canterbury-Bankstown pays tribute to Anzac Day

Canterbury-Bankstown pays tribute to Anzac Day

THOUSANDS of people kept the Anzac spirit alive on Sunday when they gathered at Canterbury-Bankstown RSL clubs to pay their respects to our Diggers.

At Bass Hill RSL Club, a record number of more than 1000 people gathered at the club for a street march before returning for the dawn stand-to services.

Three generations of the Hilton family made an appearance to honour their father grandfather and great-grandfather Christopher who served in the 2nd Tunnellers unit in France during World War I.

“I always attend the service because I think back to my dad. I used to march with him as a young kid,” son and Bankstown RSL sub-branch vice chairman Brian Hilton said.

“I am extremely proud of my father. He never ever spoke about war and it was only after his death that I proudly wear is medals.”

The late Mr Hilton’s grandson Darren brought his seven-month-old daughter Keira with him in a bid to carry on the legacy.

``Anzac Day is a day about respect,’’ he said.

``Everyone tries to make a little time for our fallen comrades.

``I might not have known them personally but it’s definitely worth making the effort.’’

Veteran David Drennan, 91, of Birrong, spent four years serving on war ships.

He said the most important thing about Anzac Day was remembering his mates and the different experiences he endured.

``The noise of aircrafts sticks in your mind. Every plane you see was the enemy’s and they would always hit our men.’’

Ex-serviceman Robert Kirkpatrick, 89, of Yagoona, agreed and said despite also serving in World War II for four years, the day meant more to him because he had uncles who lost their lives fighting for our country.

``My uncle was in the first Australian Light Horse so he actually fought the war on horse back,’’ he said.

His daughter Pamela Goodstate said she was extremely proud.

``We are all so proud of their courage,’’ she said.

``All the men who died from their wounds will always be remembered.’’
